Make Your Own Nut Butter
Walk down the aisle of a grocery or specialty store and you’ll very likely see pumpkin spice almond butter, spicy cashew butter or another jazzed up nut butter. These trendy products sound fancy, but they’re very easy to make at home with a few ingredients. Start with almonds or another nut and customize the flavors with spices and other pantry ingredients.
Use this guide to make your own nut butter like our chai spiced almond butter.
Choose a nut or nut blend. Nuts that work well include almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, cashews and pecans.
For added flavor, roast nuts at 350°F for about 10 minutes. If roasting hazelnuts, rub the skin off with a paper towel after they come out of the oven.
Blending your nut butter in a food processor can take up to 15 minutes depending on the nut blend. It takes some time for the nuts to release their oils.
While nut butters are delicious with nuts as the only ingredient, you can customize your flavor by choosing a variety of add-ins. Delicious ingredients to blend into your nut butter include sea salt, vanilla extract, maple syrup, honey, dark chocolate, flax seeds, sunflower seeds, raisins and spices (cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, ground ginger, allspice and more).
Store in the refrigerator.
