Make Your Own Yogurt Parfait
Yogurt parfaits deserve their place on fancy breakfast bars, but they’re also easy to make at home. Better yet, you can customize the ingredients to suit your preferences. A dairy or non-dairy yogurt parfait can include fruit, nuts, seeds and garnishes - whatever you have available. Put together a balanced yogurt parfait by following our formula below.
Yogurt is the base of a parfait. Whether you choose dairy or non-dairy yogurt, select one that is rich in protein and low in added sugar. Plain yogurt may be a good option if you plan to use fruit or a sweetened ingredient like granola. You could also make chia pudding with yogurt.
Pick a fruit:
Any type of fruit pairs well with yogurt. Add whole berries or chopped citrus, tropical fruits, apples and bananas. If selecting frozen fruit, allow time for it to thaw.
Pick a nut or seed:
Nuts and seeds not only provide heart-healthy fats and protein, but they also add crunch to a yogurt parfait. Choose unsalted nuts and seeds such as walnuts, almonds, pecans, chia seeds, hemp seeds, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds. Roughly chop nuts before adding.
Nut or seed butters (peanut butter, almond butter, sunflower seed butter) are also an excellent choice, though they don’t provide the contrast in texture with yogurt that the nuts and seeds do.
Pick a garnish (or two or three):
Many accent ingredients pair well with yogurt, fruit and nuts or seeds. The following garnishes add a ton of flavor and texture: fresh mint, granola, honey, cinnamon, shredded coconut and citrus zest.
Layer each ingredient in a Mason jar or another special piece of glassware for a colorful, tasty breakfast or snack!
