5 Ways to Use Leftover Scallions
Some recipes don’t call for using the entire ingredient as it’s available for purchase. Use leftover ingredients, reduce food waste and boost the nutrition of your meals by cooking with alliums like leftover scallions. Scallions are young green onions that have a spicy, peppery onion flavor. The green stalk tastes mild while the white bulb is more pungent. Scallion greens add great flavor to a dish without tasting too harsh on your palate.
Blend raw scallions into a hummus like our Dill Pickle Hummus. They add a peppery flavor without being overpowering. Scallions also add flecks of color to an otherwise plain-looking dip!
Add chopped scallions into a green salad or grain bowl like our Quinoa Bowl with Spicy Peanut Dressing. Add them raw or sauté them in olive oil for a more mellow flavor.
Brush whole scallions with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper and throw them on a hot grill. Watch as the scallions develop a nice char.
As you make the pickling brine for Quick Pickled Red Onions, consider preparing extra brine to quick pickle whole scallions. Add coriander and cumin seeds for more flavor.
