Seeds: Top Sources of Heart-Healthy Fats

Seeds, along with other plant foods including nuts, olive oil and avocado, are one of the top sources of heart-healthy fats. As a macronutrient, fat has been demonized; however, fats play an important role in our health. Fats provide energy, support cell growth, protect our organs, help keep our bodies warm and aid in absorbing nutrients such as vitamins A, D, E and K.

Seeds contain primarily unsaturated fats, which include monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Choosing unsaturated fats, found mostly in plant foods, can help improve blood cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease.

Seeds also contain protein, which helps contribute to a sense of fullness after eating.
