Mythbuster: Superfoods
Mythbuster: Superfoods
A superfood is defined as a food that contains compounds that are thought to benefit health. Some foods that are called out for being superfoods are berries, leafy greens and salmon. However, the concept of a superfood is potentially limiting. Many foods, not just those that are deemed superfoods, have properties that benefit health.
One could argue that all plant foods are superfoods. Plant foods contain phytochemicals, biologically active compounds that have powerful health properties as antioxidants. Plant foods also contain short-chain fatty acids, probiotics and prebiotics, minerals such as iron and potassium and vitamins such as vitamin A and vitamin C.
Because all foods have a different nutrient profile, we benefit from eating a variety of foods across food groups. The most important message about superfoods is to include particularly nutrient-dense foods such as berries when and if they are available and accessible, but more importantly, to focus on an overall healthy eating pattern with many different foods, especially plant foods.
Consider these tips for incorporating nutritious foods into a way of eating to support overall health.
